Antique important 53,5 x 44 cm Russian Orthodox icon of St. Nicholas of Mozhaysk

SOLD

Antique important 53,5 x 44 cm Russian Orthodox icon of St. Nicholas of Mozhaysk

Early 19th century Russia (probably Mosow or Petersburg)

An important 53,5 x 44 cm Russian icon depicting Nicholas the Wonderworker, St. Nicholas of Mozhaysk.
His central depiction is accompanied by a iconographic frame with hagiographical ‘stamps’ of his life and miracles surrounded by a floral, colorful and gilded border.

This high quality, very large and very detailed icon is in good condition, small blemishes, some rubbing to the gilding on the right border and tiny cracks in the paintwork show it's age.

This important Russian Orthodox religious veneration artwork was most certainly made for the Church or commissioned by a noble family. It's size and quality make this icon a rare piece of history.

According to a Russian legend, in the 13th century citizens of the besieged city of Mozhaysk began to pray hard for protection to Nicholas the Wonderworker. Suddenly his image appeared in the sky. He was formidable and in one hand he held a sword, and in the other, as if the city itself. The enemies, of course, were scattered, and in Russia this image became famous. Since then, "Nikola of Mozhaysk" has been depicted in icons and sculptures with a sword and the Mozhaysk kremlin in his hands.
