Bacchanal, ca. 1904. Oil on canvas. This painting was part of the glorious decoration of the architect's home of Jos Bascourt (1863-1927), completed in 1904 at Sint-Vincentiusstraat 16 in Antwerp. In 1986 the building was demolished after several years of neglect. This monumental painting was saved from the demolition hammer. As mentioned on the web page of the Immovable Heritage Inventory, this classical painting of ladies making music decorated the hall on the ground floor.¹ It goes back to a smaller painting by Sir Lauwrence Alma-Tadema (1839-1912) that was sold at Christie's in London on 24.11.1989, lot 40 and is dated 1871. Although Lawrence-Tadema lived in Antwerp from 1852 to 1858, he most likely had nothing to do with the creation of this larger version. It seems plausible that Verbuecken, and/or his collaborators, used a print as an example, given that some colors differ from the original painting. A signed and 1920 dated gouache of the same composition - sold on 17.12.2021 at Arenberg Auctions (lot 474) - indicates that Verbuecken knew Alma-Tadema's prototype well and used it for his own work. A youthful, idealized Neoclassical marble bust, possibly an allegorical figure like Cupid, or a putto (cherub). Italy, C.1890-1910. Guglielmo Pugi (1850-1915) was a renowned Italian sculptor from Florence, active in the late 19th to early 20th century. He specialized in marble busts, allegorical figures, and classical themes, often collaborating with his sons in the Pugi workshop. Works from his studio are signed "Pugi" and were exported widely, especially to the U.S. and Europe, during the Grand Tour period. Pugi's studio also exhibited at major events like the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, and his works are found in both private collections and museums today. Dimensions: H44 x W25 x 20cm. Marble bust of Corneille van Cleve

A beautiful Carrara marble bust of Corneille van Clève, after Jean-Jacques Caffieri (1725-1792). France 19th century. Corneille van Clève: Corneille van Clève was born into a family of goldsmiths of Flemish origin that settled in Paris in the early 17th century. It is thought that he first trained with Michel or François Anguier before moving to the Académie Royale and then to the Académie de France, Rome, in 1671 where he closely studied the works of Gianlorenzo Bernini. He extended his stay in Italy by four years, remaining in Venice, before finally returning to France in 1678. He was finally accepted by the Académie in 1681 with his marble figure of Polyphemus, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, that was inspired by Annibale Carracci's fresco in the Palazzo Farnese, Rome. For the following 40 years he enjoyed a highly successful career working for royal, as well as private, clients and the church. Dimensions; H67 x W50 x D35 H26.38 x W19.69 x D13.78 inch.
